Joining Forces with Team Save the Children!!

10155797_647070355049_2063149448_nI have had a number of opportunities to be able to serve others in less fortunate situations quite a few times throughout my life. Giving back has been something that was ingrained early in my childhood through my parents and through my church. My first introductions to service was helping out with small things such as yard work or with home repair. While at college at Buena Vista University I took advantage of an opportunity to travel to an orphanage in Jamaica during a spring break trip. Although I always knew that service was important, I think this is the trip where I finally was able to see some of the impact that can be made when people give a little of themselves to others. Ashley was one of the student leaders on that trip.

Right after college, Ashely accepted a position at BVU. One of her main roles was organizing service projects on campus. After I started working at BVU, I was fortunate enough to be able to join her as a supervisor bringing college students on a number of different service trips, including going back to the very same orphanage in Jamaica where service really “clicked” for me.

Since I started competing as a pro triathlete, I have been looking for a way to incorporate giving back into my training/racing. I’ve volunteered at a few events, which is always great, however, I was looking to  be a part of something larger than the “Drive By Service” as my wife calls it. So when the opportunity to partner with Save the Children came up, I was thrilled!

scus_logo_stacked_colpos_rgbSave the Children’s mission is “to inspire breakthroughs in the way the world treats children and to achieve immediate and lasting change in their lives.” It was the second part of this mission that really caught my attention. Most of the service opportunities that I have been a part of focused on children in impoverished situations, so that has always had a huge place in my heart. As I continue to take part in philanthropy, it is important to me  that any organization I work with seeks to provide a long term effect. Save the Children shares this value so much they put it in their mission statement.

Save the Children has partnered with Ironman as well as other race organizations in attempt to raise funds to support their mission. This also allows many athletes to be able to race with a purpose and for such an important cause. I am very excited for the opportunity to support their efforts to reach children in need from all around the world.
